Can You Play Football with a Fractured Finger?

Finger fractures are common in athletes. The injured finger is typically splinted for 2 to 3 weeks while the bone heals. However, you may be able to continue to play football while your finger heals, depending on the severity of the injury and the treating doctor’s recommendation. Your football association or school will likely have rules regarding the use of splints during play, which may affect whether you can participate.
Depending on the extent of the injury, a soft support may be enough to protect your fractured finger during play, if cleared by your doctor. These supports may include elastic compression bandages or athletic tape. The number of layers of these supports may be restricted by your association. In some cases, you may be able to wear an aluminum splint if it fits within your glove. Buddy taping the injured finger to the one next to it provides extra support. However, your fingers typically must be separated while playing football, leaving your finger vulnerable to further injury.
More commonly, finger fractures require hard support to keep your finger immobile as it heals. These splints or casts may be allowed while playing football, but they typically have to be covered by softer material. Soft closed-cell foam may be used to pad the outside of the splint, often with a minimum thickness of 1/2 inch or more. This will protect your finger. However, it may interfere with your performance.

Goose Goslin

Goose Goslin was the only American Leaguer between 1921 and 1939 who was on five pennant-winning teams despite never playing for the Yankees or under Connie Mack.

Playing in Washington, Goslin had no hope of ever winning a Triple Crown himself. The outfield fences in Griffith Stadium were so distant that no Washington player won a home run crown until the 1950s, when changes were made in the park¡¯s contours. Goslin hit 17 homers on the road in 1926 and none on his home soil. The Senators in those years were good enough to win without the long ball, however, taking back-to-back pennants in 1924 and 1925. When a drought followed, Goslin was dealt to the Browns early in the 1930 season only a year and one-half after he won the AL batting title. Washington owner Clark Griffith almost immediately regretted having let Goose go and worked for two years to get him back. Reobtained on December 14, 1932, in a six-player trade, Goslin helped the Senators to win their third and last pennant the following summer. Unable to pay Goose what he was worth, the Depression-handicapped Griffith then swapped him to Detroit. Goslin played on flag winners in each of his first two seasons in the Motor City and produced the hit in the 1935 World Series that brought the Tigers their first world championship. Goose was selected to the Hall of Fame in 1968.

10 Poses That a Yoga Beginner Should Know

All a beginner to yoga needs is an open mind. You don’t have to be able to touch your hands to your toes; or twist your body into impossible shapes. You should go in expecting only one thing — to become flexible in body, mind and spirit. Start with these 10 poses, and you will have learned the basics of this ancient and life-altering discipline.
Mountain is the core pose of your yoga practice. The alignment you develop in this pose will carry over into every other pose you attempt, even after you reach more advanced levels. In addition to lining up your body correctly, you balance your weight evenly between both feet, which stabilizes you in later balances.
You might notice that many of the poses in a beginner yoga sequence are standing poses that strengthen your body’s foundation and support. Low Lunge works the quadriceps, the large muscle group in the thighs, while stretching the hip flexors. High Lunge, with the back knee lifted, opens the hamstrings, as well.
Jason Crandell wrote an article, “Triangle Pose” for YogaJournal.com. He says, “Trikonasana, like so many yoga poses, combines many elements in one posture.” Triangle expands your torso in all four directions, releases your chest and shoulders, enhances balance, builds strength in your legs, and even provides a mild twist.
Tree is one of the first standing balances you might learn. You balance on one foot and lengthen your body, creating space all along your spine. More subtle enhancements of the pose involve opening your groin and relaxing your shoulders, which will prevent injury in more advanced poses.
Downward Facing Dog is yet another multi-functional pose. It is an inversion, which means your head is at a lower level than your heart. You also get the benefit of a forward bend, a shoulder opener, an upper body strengthener, and a mild backbend.
Crandell, in a YogaJournal.com article on Cobra, calls it a “baby backbend”; that “can help compensate for all those hours spent hunched in front of a computer.” Cobra opens your chest and shoulders, and builds your back muscles to improve overall posture. Like other backbends, Cobra boosts your energy, too.
Contrary to a backbend, Seated Forward Bend has a calming effect on your nervous system. Because your body is folded, you can block outside distractions and bring your focus inward. Physically, your hamstrings and spine lengthen. While the sensation can be intense, it can also be a relief for your lower back.
Generally, twists wring out and stimulate your internal organs, particularly those in your digestive system. Reclining Twist works well for you as a beginner because you use the floor as a guide to keep your shoulders and hips in correct alignment.
Seated in Bound Angle, your groin and inner thighs experience a release. You can vary this beginner posture by folding forward with the added perk of freeing your spine and cooling your energy. This pose leads well into Corpse pose. Corpse brings your body into a state of deep relaxation and finishes off your practice.

What Does It Take to Be an NFL Player?

The NFL is the pinnacle of organized football. It employs the best players in the world, and the game itself unfolds under the biggest of media spotlights. Yet every one of those professional players had a moment where they stepped onto a football field for the first time, with dreams of the NFL so far away. Several attributes are shared by those that have made the ascent successfully through youth and college football to the professional ranks. Keep in mind, however, the process exists to separate the rare few who are qualified from all the players who aren’t.
The path to the NFL begins at the youth level. While many players begin playing football in high school, the competitive nature of college recruiting has created a cottage industry of personal coaching and instruction for children playing in Pop Warner as young as 5 years old. The players who can make the biggest impact at the high school level, and who can garner conference and state recognition for their play, have the best chance to get recruited by college teams. The more experience and development players get before high school usually helps those players stand out.
Players who rise to the top of their high school conferences get noticed by college recruiters. Obviously, this takes a strong work ethic, athletic skills, talent for the sport itself and the ability to execute consistently while minimizing mistakes. College programs often cull local, state and sometimes national prep football headlines, looking for the playmakers who appear consistently. Players who make all-league, all-state or all-American honors receive heavy attention from college teams. The college recruiting process can be difficult for players; the best will have multiple options for college play. This choice is often the most important one to make. Factors such as playing time, the coaching staff¡¯s NFL experience, the prominence of the college program and the amount of media attention potentially available are all factors requiring careful consideration. Mid-level players may receive scouting and offers from smaller colleges, but those players will have to make an effort to sell their talents more than top players usually do.
The scouting and recruiting process leads the best and most talented players to the college ranks. But players who didn¡¯t make it successfully through this process to gain a scholarship with a college team have options. Many teams try out groups of walk-on players throughout the preseason to add depth, fill out the practice squad and find additional impact players without using valuable scholarships that are set by the NCAA. To make it onto the starting roster of a college team as a walk-on takes talent and considerable drive, and a number of walk-on players have used that dedication and drive to make it to the NFL.
The college players who perform at the highest level consistently while garnering national media attention, and players who win collegiate awards and are named to all-conference and all-star teams will have a leg up and be considered as NFL Draft potential for the league’s 32 teams. Three years following a player¡¯s high school graduation date, he is eligible to declare for the NFL Draft. Many players will have a sense where they will rate in the draft, although this is by no means a lock. Some players who declare won¡¯t be drafted at all and can sign as an undrafted free agent with NFL teams. Drafted players and undrafted free agents go to NFL training camps in July, where open competition for roster slots and practice squad assignments take place.

What Are the Causes of Ankle Pain in Children?

The ankle is a hinge joint that connects the tibia and fibula bones, and provides stability for weight bearing and foot mobility. Foot and ankle pain is quite common during childhood and adolescence, and most of the time is no cause for concern. It is important for parents and children to educate themselves on the most common causes of ankle pain in children to determine when medical intervention is necessary.
When children are flat-footed, it means they do not have a normal arch. Flat feet can occur in one or both feet, and usually does not appear until the age of 2 or 3. Flat feet can occasionally cause pain in the ankle, heel or arch, particularly when running or walking. Doctors often recommend a shoe insert or heel cup to minimize the pain, according to FamilyDoctor.org, and sometimes recommend resting when the pain occurs with overuse. Particular shoe styles, barefoot walking or exercises cannot improve flat feet.
Ankle pain is often a sign of growing pains, which usually occur between the ages of 8 and 12 as children become more active in physical activities. Thin, flat, crescent-shaped growth centers separate bone and cartilage in younger children. When a child enters puberty, these growth centers close, according to surgeon podiatrist Dr. David Zuckerman of TheFootSpecialist.com. This can result in heel, foot and and ankle pain, and even cause limping. Orthotics, a splint or soft cast can often prevent pain and injury while strengthening the feet and ankles.
According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries in sports and are a common cause of ankle pain. The Varsity Orthopedics website notes that sports like track, football, soccer, hockey and gymnastics coupled with overuse and improper technique can cause injuries because a child¡¯s inner ankle is less stable and will turn inward after a contact injury.

Vince Lombardi

Vince Lombardi never said, “Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.” Although that is the quote most often attributed to him, his actual words were: “Winning is not everything, but making the effort to win is.” All his life, Lombardi made that effort.

The Brooklyn-born Lombardi (1913-1970) first entered the football limelight during the mid-1930s as a guard on Fordham University’s famous “Seven Blocks of Granite” line. He didn’t play in the NFL but went directly into coaching.
He built a sterling reputation as an assistant with several strong college teams and, in the 1950s, as the New York Giants’ offensive coach under Jim Lee Howell.
Meanwhile, desperation had set in with the Green Bay Packers, who were at the lowest point in their history. In 1958, they managed to win only one game. Lombardi was hired as head coach and given complete control.
It was the first time he’d been head man other than of a high school team. Lombardi traded for such young players with potential as Willie Davis, changed quarterback flop Paul Hornung into a star running back, nurtured unheralded Bart Starr into a brilliant quarterback, and drove the team mercilessly.
Lombardi emphasized execution, blocking, and tackling rather than razzle-dazzle. Most important, he instilled in his players a willingness to “make the effort.”
The results were instantaneous. His 1959 team won seven of 12 games. In 1960, Green Bay took its division title, but that was only the beginning.
Lombardi’s Packers were NFL champions in 1961 and 1962. After two years of retooling, they won titles in 1965, 1966, and 1967. The latter two teams won the first two Super Bowls.
In 1969, the Washington Redskins, another team with a long losing habit, hired Lombardi to turn them around. He was well on his way to doing just that when he was fatally stricken with cancer before the 1970 season.
He was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. He is memorialized by the Lombardi Trophy, awarded to each year’s Super Bowl winner.

Willie Lanier

Willie Lanier was called “Bear” or “Honeybear” by his teammates because he looked like a big, friendly teddy bear.
Willie Lanier, however, was more like a grizzly when it came time to chase down the opposition. He went after ball carriers ferociously, and he defined the middle linebacker position for 11 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.
While his hard-hitting style of play earned him instant recognition as a pro, it came with a price tag.
In the seventh game of his rookie season, Lanier (born 1945) suffered a severe concussion after a violent collision with a Denver Broncos ball carrier.
“I was not only afraid my career might be over,” he said, “but even worse, that my life might not be normal again.”
Fortunately, Willie was able to return to action after missing just four games. From then on, he wore a specially padded helmet and adopted a “careful” approach to his play.
His new approach must have worked, as he missed only one game in the next 10 seasons while accumulating numerous honors. He was All-Pro, All-AFL, or All-AFC every year from 1968-75, and he was selected to the AFL All-Star Game or the Pro Bowl eight times.
One of Lanier’s best-remembered defensive stands came in a 1969 AFL playoff game against the New York Jets. The Chiefs were clinging to a 6-3 lead when the Jets got a first down on the Kansas City 1-yard line. Three times the Jets challenged Lanier and three times they failed. The Chiefs went on to win 13-6 and advanced to Super Bowl IV, where they upset the Minnesota Vikings 23-7.
Many have suggested that no one- not even the fabled Dick Butkus- ever played the middle linebacker position better. Ermal Allen of the Dallas Cowboys’ research and development department once remarked, “You hear a lot about Dick Butkus and Tommy Nobis, but this Willie Lanier is really the best middle linebacker in pro football.”
